To me it's inspiration.
Like when I did my first tandem skydive and talked to a friend about with sooooo much excitement, thrill, fear and relief, who then not only went and did a tandem but full out trained to be a solo diver and instructor! He tried to convince me to do the same but it didn't work.
Leading people to lead themselves.
That's what it's all about.
Okay yes, there may need to be some functional skills in there if you manage people, but these can be sourced and recruited.
Leadership though is pushing people's beliefs, ideas and norms to be able to experience different, new and amazing things.
We all know some great leaders - their agenda good and/or bad for humankind - but their ability to inspire was unquestionable to those that followed and continued the legacy beyond the leaders participation. For example, Steve Jobs is no longer with us, but Apple continues to grow. A more personal example on a smaller but my whole world scale, when my younger brother passed away many years ago he inspired me to push myself to be my best, to try and then to try harder. His passion for living and focus that he would go to university never faltered even though he didn't make it - his choice was for life. And I am still inspired to live my life in its best way - challenges, love, fear, success - whatever comes I will embrace it and grow.
Who are leaders?
We all are, if we choose to be. We all have the potential to inspire someone, small or grand, it's more important to know that that inspirational act (you likely won't see or know you did it) changed someone's life.
The skydive example above, I had no idea it was an inspirational thing, I was simply egging my friend on and celebrating his successes with him! Not until I left to come travelling in Australia, he'd written a note in the travel guide he got me telling me that I had been a true inspiration to him. I was touch - oblivious - but incredibly touched.
Have a look around, and dig deep inside. You're changing lives everyday, yours and others.
Right now it's for you to decide what kind of chhange you'd like to create.
