You get home from work, make yourself some dinner, eat and grab your iPad and start surfing the net. You're searching just randomly...funny memes, personal emails, meal ideas, surfboards, fashion trends, fixtures for your teams next upcoming games, holiday destinations, new kitchens, furniture...
But where is it that you stop?
What do you spend most of your time looking at in your free time?
Some time ago, I was out with a few girlfriends and one of them was at a loss for what she wanted to do next in her work. She'd been temping since moving to Australia and having finished her previous temping job in insurance she had started pondering "what do I want to do".
I was asking questions around what she enjoyed, and my friend Rach then asked "what do you research in your spare time?" I love this! The rationale - if you spend time on something without a financial reward you must get a heart/love reward from it. Do something you already love doing, you'll do it justice because you have passion for it and in addition you can be rewarded financially. What resonates with me is that means that you'll always give it your best, and you can be more of who you truly are more of the time.
There is a but, and I've heard it from people many times - "what if I start to make a business out of my hobby/something I love, and then I start to resent it?" Okay fair question, but what if you don't, what if you absolutely love it and it makes you the happiest and best version of you? Isn't that worth taking a risk for?
Rach, spends her free time researching cafes, bars, restaurants and travel...and now she lives in New York, working in PR and write her own blog sharing her experiences of the things she loves.
