Figuring out your next move

Many many years ago, in a faraway land I studied to work in advertising. Turns out to get a job in advertising you need experience in advertising...hmm! Well that's a bit of a conundrum!

This was the first of my experiences of these kind of conundrums. I, as you may already know, took on a wonderful career in training and people development. But here the story continued with lands I wished to visit, aka media and finance industry, that would not let me in because I had not been there before.

"Arrgghh!" Begin hair pulling, cursing, "you've got to be having a laugh", and oh yes name calling - "why are they so inbred that they won't let anyone from outside in!?!" "Morons". You get the picture.

I'm sure you've been there too, but honestly, what a crock! I simply don't understand is why the walls and mountains to get in.

I've worked in so many different industries and been a success in each, yet still with banking and finance when I have applied in the last few years there his a big requirement to have industry experience. There's some logic in understanding products and legislation...but surely this is what the experts are for. In my opinion, yes it's biased but probably valid here, my knowledge and skills in people development, understanding what makes for great and effective adult learning far outweighs the need to know what products a company has (the latter can be learned and experts can be utilised for content review).

Well, whinge aside, what did this mean...? I took good jobs in various industries...I wouldn't change any of the experiences I've had because they've got me to where I am now. But what do you do when you want to leap frog to your dream job and you keep hitting glass ceiling after glass ceiling?

Step 1: Work out if that next step is really and truly what you want.

Yes! I hear you tell yourself, but more likely than not the person that's mostly in your way of getting it is you. Self doubt, self sabotage, shying away, letting someone else have it because they deserve it more than you...

Step 2: If it is what you really want, get your whole system on board.

You need to be aligned consciously, unconsciously and in your higher self (spiritually). If you really want it every part of your system needs to be on board so you can get it.

Step 3: Make the move

Once you're aligned, start taking action. Be where you need to be, ask for the promotion, present the best version of you and it'll be a hard thing to say no to.

Step 4: Celebrate!!

Because you deserve it, give gratitude and thanks, pat yourself on the back, do a silly dance in the ladies bathroom! But do it! Give yourself thanks for what you've achieved because you'll need all of you there and on board for the next goal.
