I met depression for the first time through an old colleague of mine. She told me of her experience, she had been diagnosed with post traumatic depression following the birth of a child and had not been able to connect with her baby for a very long time. She told me of how she would not want to come out of her room, hold the baby or be anywhere near it, how she'd cry all the time, sit in a bundle in the corner of her bedroom to hide away from the world beyond her.
As she spoke about this experience, it completely baffled me...that a person could feel such a way that whatever advice they were offered or support they were given it was all in vein...it only made the situation worse, and made them feel worse.
Thankfully, my colleague through medication and counselling was able to get herself back into a more stable and positive mindset and re-engage with her child, to then develop a loving and actively engaged relationship.
Over the years, I've gone through my own sadnesses, some of which I've shared already, and admittedly, at times I've thought to myself 'man, I'm so depressed!' Perhaps it was a cry for help for the things I was going through at the time, so many people do this, but I never really understood it.
I'm not saying I fully do now, and still hold a belief around the power of mindset...but what I do know is that subconscious mindset is so much more powerful than conscious. Even when you consciously say 'I know I am' or 'I know I believe that' there may well be a completely different belief held by subconscious that is saying 'I'm not'.
What I don't want to do here is diagnose the onset or recovery from depression. I'm certainly not qualified to do that medically...what I am doing here is asking if your whole system believes 'I can' or 'I am' how different would you be?
In the last few months, I've seen a few posts and met some new people that have had their own battles with depression, and I have to say they inspire me. How they have got themselves back on track and are now searching for more purpose and happiness in their lives. But it also gave me a new respect for individuals who experience any and all levels of depression, the amount of emotional, mental and spiritual stress they are under is unmeasurable, and to be able to see the way out of it is particularly hard. The fact that they have is wonderful, but sadly it's not always the case.
Mental health and wellness is so important, when you think our thoughts create out actions - negative thoughts equal negative action/feeling.
What I would love to suggest for us all is that we maintain positive mindsets and raise our awareness and take notice of any negative or stressful states that we experience. Just to notice them and be mindful of what created that state so we can better manage it in the future.
